Paul Scholes Warns of ‘Relegation’ Threat If Man Utd Fail in Summer Transfer Window

Man Utd Legend Paints Grim Picture of Club’s Future

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has issued a stark warning, claiming the club could be in danger of relegation next season if they fail to make major squad reinforcements in the summer transfer window.

The Red Devils have endured a disastrous campaign, sitting 13th in the Premier League, a low point even in their post-Sir Alex Ferguson era. Ruben Amorim took over as head coach after Erik ten Hag’s departure, but his attempts to impose a new tactical system have been hampered by a lack of suitable players.

United’s lack of activity in the January window has only added to concerns, with Patrick Dorgu the only signing. The club is expected to return for Geovany Quenda in the summer, but Scholes believes their transfer priorities lie elsewhere.

Scholes: United Lack a Strong Core

Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, Scholes pointed out a glaring issue: United lack a proper spine in their squad.

“There are a few things that are concerning,” Scholes said. “There’s a lot of stuff [Amorim] needs to do, we all know that, especially in transfer windows, but I don’t see a core of players.”

He compared United’s squad to title rivals:

“When you look at teams, you look right down the spine of a team. Liverpool: great goalkeeper, great center-half, forwards, midfielders, whatever. I don’t think United have any of that in any position.”

Scholes’ Transfer Wishlist

Scholes believes United need at least six new signings in key areas:

  • Goalkeeper (potentially two)
  • Two center-backs
  • Two central midfielders
  • Two center-forwards

His comments imply that Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee may not be enough to lead the attack.

“When you’ve got that spine right, then you can add bits to it. That spine, that core, is so important,” Scholes emphasized.

Relegation a Possibility?

Scholes issued a shocking warning about United’s recent form under Amorim:

“If they don’t get that right this summer, this might sound ridiculous, but the form since this manager is in, they could be looking at relegation. I’m telling you, it’s been so bad.”

While relegation seems extreme, the fact that Scholes—a club legend—is raising the alarm highlights the deep issues at Old Trafford.

With a massive summer overhaul needed, the question remains: Will Manchester United finally get it right, or will their decline continue?
