Arne Slot Doubles Down on Trent Alexander-Arnold Stance

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has once again defended Trent Alexander-Arnold amid scrutiny over the right-back’s defensive performances and ongoing speculation linking him with a move to Real Madrid.

Alexander-Arnold Under the Spotlight

The Liverpool academy graduate has faced criticism for his defensive contributions, particularly after a challenging performance in last Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Manchester United. This match coincided with Real Madrid’s submission of an opening bid to acquire the England international.

Slot, however, has firmly rejected the notion that Alexander-Arnold is solely responsible for Liverpool’s defensive struggles. The Reds’ defensive record has worsened significantly, conceding 20 goals in their last 17 matches (1.2 per game) compared to just five in their first 12 games (0.4 per game).

“I do see a certain pattern in the goals we concede, but I don’t see the pattern if it is about Trent,” Slot explained in a press conference ahead of Liverpool’s FA Cup clash with Accrington Stanley. “Not at all.”

Slot Highlights Positives

Slot emphasized that Alexander-Arnold has delivered numerous strong performances this season, with only a handful of difficult outings.

“Trent has had one difficult game for us and maybe a few that were OK to good. Mainly, he has had great games when he played for us this season,” the Dutch manager noted.

He also praised the right-back’s impact during the Carabao Cup semi-final against Tottenham Hotspur, where Alexander-Arnold came off the bench and nearly scored with a stunning volley that required a desperate clearance from Radu Dragusin.

“I know there is a lot of focus on him at the moment, but I would also like to highlight how well he did when he came on in the last half hour and how our fans reacted to him. That is what pleased me even more during that game.”

Real Madrid Interest Looms

Real Madrid have reportedly made an initial offer for Alexander-Arnold, whose contract at Liverpool is set to expire at the end of the season. Despite the speculation, Liverpool have rejected Madrid’s advances and appear determined to retain their star right-back at least until the summer.

Looking Ahead

Slot’s public backing of Alexander-Arnold suggests the manager sees him as a vital part of Liverpool’s plans, both for the remainder of this season and potentially beyond. However, with his contract situation unresolved and Madrid’s interest persistent, the spotlight on Alexander-Arnold is unlikely to fade anytime soon.
