Seagulls Land Championship Standout on Long-Term Deal
Brighton & Hove Albion have officially confirmed the signing of Derby County defender Eiran Cashin, wrapping up a long-standing pursuit of the talented 23-year-old.
Cashin has put pen to paper on a contract running until June 2030, with Brighton reportedly paying a fee in the region of £9 million for the highly sought-after Republic of Ireland Under-21 international.
Cashin’s Rise at Derby County
A product of Derby’s academy, Cashin was fast-tracked into the first team under former manager Wayne Rooney. Since then, he has become a mainstay in the Rams’ backline, making 144 senior appearances across all competitions.
He played a pivotal role in Derby’s 2023-24 League One promotion campaign and has been one of their top performers in the Championship this season. However, a recent hamstring injury sidelined him for five games—coinciding with Derby’s slide into the relegation zone, having won just one of their last eight matches.
Why Brighton Wanted Cashin
Brighton’s possession-based style under Fabian Hurzeler made Cashin an ideal fit, with his ball-playing ability and defensive prowess catching the club’s attention.
Key Stats from Cashin’s Championship Season:
- 814 successful passes – Most for Derby in the Championship
- 33 tackles won – Second-most in the squad (behind Ebou Adams – 71)
- 70 aerial duels won – Third-most (behind Curtis Nelson – 80)
His ability to progress the ball from defense, along with aerial dominance and defensive stability, makes him a strong addition to Brighton’s backline.
Brighton’s Excitement Over Cashin Signing
Seagulls boss Fabian Hurzeler expressed his delight over the new arrival:
“We’re delighted to welcome Eiran to the club. He’s gained a lot of experience in the Championship, has a good profile, and as a left-sided defender, he will give us another strong defensive option.”
“We’re looking forward to working with Eiran and watching him develop with us.”
Cashin becomes Brighton’s second signing of the January transfer window, following the arrival of Diego Gomez from Inter Miami last month.
