Deschamps Confirms Mbappe’s Return: ‘Of Course He’ll Be Here’

Didier Deschamps has put an end to speculation surrounding Kylian Mbappe’s absence from the French national team, confirming that the Real Madrid forward will return for the upcoming Nations League fixtures against Croatia next month—fitness permitting.

Mbappe Set for France Comeback

Mbappe was not included in France’s squads for the October and November 2024 international breaks, sparking rumors of tension between him and Deschamps. However, the Les Bleus coach dismissed any talk of a rift, stating that Mbappe’s absence was due to “very specific reasons”.

“Of course he’ll be there. Why wouldn’t he be? For very specific reasons, he was not included. But he’ll be there if nothing happens to him between now and then.”

Deschamps also reaffirmed Mbappe’s commitment to the national team, adding:

“He’s very attached to the French team, even if he’s had a complicated personal period. He’s back to full fitness, and you can see that in his game, and in his head too.”

Mbappe’s Leadership Not in Question

Despite his recent absence, Mbappe’s role as France’s captain is secure. Deschamps made it clear that missing the last international windows will not affect his leadership responsibilities.

“There have always been internal discussions, individual or collective, and the previous international break does not call into question his leadership.”

While Deschamps stopped short of confirming Mbappe as captain for March, he emphasized their ongoing communication:

“I have no reason today to say that he will not be captain in March. But I will discuss with him, as we often do.”

Mbappe’s Resurgence at Real Madrid

After a difficult start at Real Madrid, Mbappe has found his best form in 2025, scoring 10 goals across all competitions since the turn of the year. With his fitness and confidence restored, his return to France’s squad will be a massive boost ahead of their Nations League campaign.
