Guardiola Reinforces Midfield with Rodri, Leaves New Signing Out of UCL Squad Ahead of Real Madrid Clash

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has commented on the club’s latest signing, Nico González from Porto, and the decision to include him in the Champions League squad ahead of their crucial playoff tie against Real Madrid in the Round of 16.

What Happened?

City were highly active in the recent winter transfer window, securing several key additions, including defensive trio Christian McFarlane, Vitor Reis, and Abdukodir Khusanov. They also reinforced their midfield and attack with the signings of Nico González and Omar Marmoush.

However, it was González’s arrival that held particular significance for Guardiola due to the long-term absence of Rodri, who suffered an ACL injury earlier in the season, severely impacting City’s form and performances.

What Did Guardiola Say About Nico González?

Speaking at the press conference ahead of City’s FA Cup tie against Leyton Orient on Saturday, Guardiola praised González’s versatility and physical attributes.

“Nico? He is a very important player for us. This position has been a weakness since Rodri’s absence,” Guardiola said.

“He is a young player who excels as both a defensive midfielder and a number eight. He is physically very strong. I’ve known him since his time at La Masia, and his father also worked here.”

Man City’s Champions League Squad Announcement

Manchester City officially submitted their Champions League squad, including new signings like Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov, and Nico González. However, there was a surprise inclusion—Rodri, despite his long-term injury.

On the other hand, Brazilian defender Vitor Reis, who joined from Palmeiras, was left out. According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, this exclusion does not indicate a change in the club’s long-term plans for the player.

Romano added that Guardiola believes the 19-year-old defender needs more time to adapt to European football, whereas Marmoush, Khusanov, and González already have the necessary experience for the challenge.

Latest Injury Updates Ahead of Real Madrid Clash

City’s FA Cup match against Leyton Orient will serve as a warm-up before their highly anticipated Champions League tie against Real Madrid on Tuesday.

According to reports, several key players—Jérémy Doku, Rúben Dias, Ederson, and Nathan Aké—have returned to training.

Guardiola confirmed their progress, saying: “Some of them might play against Leyton. We’ll see what happens.”

With City looking to reclaim their form in Europe, all eyes will be on how Guardiola sets up his squad for the upcoming clash against Los Blancos.
