In Memoriam: Former Auxerre Goalkeeper Anthony Basso (1979-2025)

This weekend, the Burgundy region of France mourns the loss of one of its own, as former professional goalkeeper Anthony Basso has sadly passed away at the age of 45.

A Promising Start in Besançon

Born in the picturesque city of Besançon, Basso embarked on his professional football journey with AJ Auxerre in 1999. His early potential soon saw him make a move to Italy, joining Serie A giants Udinese. Though he made just one appearance for the Italian side, his career took shape through several loan spells at lower-tier Italian clubs.

A Viking in Norway

The highlight of Basso’s career came in 2005 during his tenure with Norwegian club Viking FK. Managed by the renowned Roy Hodgson, Basso’s heroic performance against AS Monaco in the UEFA Cup (now Europa League) etched his name in Viking folklore. His numerous outstanding saves secured a memorable 1-0 victory, catching the eye of top European clubs.

Return to Auxerre

Impressed by his exploits in Norway, legendary Auxerre manager Guy Roux brought Basso back to the club in July 2006. Roux’s faith in Basso, favoring him over the veteran Fabien Cool, was evident. However, fate had other plans as both goalkeepers suffered long-term injuries, prompting the club to sign Rémy Riou from Olympique Lyonnais. Unfortunately, Basso did not make any appearances for Auxerre during this period.

A Brief Stint in Scotland

In 2007, Basso transferred to Hearts in the Scottish Premiership, making seven appearances across all competitions. Despite a short-lived stay, his presence was felt in the Scottish football scene.

A Hometown Hero

In 2010, Basso returned to his roots, playing for Besançon in the French fourth division. He made a handful of appearances before his final professional stop at Yverdon-Sport in the Swiss Challenge League in early 2011.

A Life Remembered

Anthony Basso’s career spanned multiple countries and leagues, leaving a lasting impact on many clubs and their supporters. As we bid farewell to a dedicated goalkeeper and an exceptional individual, his legacy lives on through the memories of his stellar performances and the joy he brought to the game of football.
