David Moyes has made a sensational return to Everton, 12 years after leaving Goodison Park to take charge of Manchester United. The 61-year-old has signed a two-and-a-half-year deal to replace Sean Dyche, the club announced on Saturday.
A Familiar Face Returns
Moyes previously managed Everton from 2002 to 2013, overseeing 518 matches in all competitions. During his first stint, he guided the Toffees to consistent top-half finishes in the Premier League, earning a reputation as one of England’s most reliable managers. Under his leadership, Everton won 218 games, drew 139, and lost 161, achieving a win percentage of 42.08%.
After departing for Manchester United in 2013, Moyes’ career took him to Real Sociedad, Sunderland, and two spells with West Ham United. Most notably, he led West Ham to Europa Conference League glory in 2023.
The Current Challenge
Moyes inherits an Everton side in turmoil. The Toffees sit 16th in the Premier League, having won just one of their last 11 top-flight matches under Dyche. Despite their struggles, Everton secured an FA Cup third-round victory over Peterborough United on Thursday, with Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman taking temporary charge.
In his statement, Moyes expressed optimism about the challenge ahead:
“It’s great to be back! I enjoyed 11 wonderful and successful years at Everton and didn’t hesitate when I was offered the opportunity to rejoin this great club. I’m excited to be working with The Friedkin Group, and I am looking forward to helping them rebuild the club.
“Now we need Goodison and all Evertonians to play their part in getting behind the players in this important season so we can move into our fabulous new stadium as a Premier League team.”
Immediate Fixtures
Moyes’ second tenure at Everton begins with a challenging schedule. His first match in charge will be at home against Aston Villa on Wednesday, followed by a clash with Tottenham at Goodison Park just four days later.
Looking Ahead
Everton fans will hope Moyes can replicate the stability and competitiveness of his first spell at the club. His task will be to steer the Toffees clear of relegation danger while preparing them for their move to a new stadium.
The club has promised further announcements regarding Moyes’ backroom staff in the coming days, as the new manager begins to shape his team for the battles ahead.
