Neymar has been recalled to Brazil’s national team for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Colombia and Argentina, marking his return after a 17-month injury layoff.
The 33-year-old forward last played for Brazil in October 2023, when he suffered a serious anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during a match against Uruguay. Now back in form after rejoining Santos, Neymar is set to feature again for his country.
Neymar’s Journey Back to Brazil Squad
Neymar is Brazil’s all-time top scorer, with 79 goals in 128 appearances, and has played in three World Cups. The superstar recently expressed his desire to compete in the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted by Canada, the United States, and Mexico.
However, his spell at Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia was disappointing, as he only made seven appearances in 18 months due to his ACL injury. In January 2025, he returned to his boyhood club Santos on a six-month deal to regain match fitness.
Since his return, Neymar has impressed, scoring three goals and providing three assists in seven matches.
Coach Dorival Junior on Neymar’s Selection
Brazil head coach Dorival Junior acknowledged Neymar’s recent performances and his fitness concerns when discussing the forward’s expected role in the squad:
“It’s a situation to be analyzed. He’s already played 90 minutes in two matches for Santos. In some of those games, he was substituted in the final moments. His performances in those games will determine his minutes with the national team.”
“We were waiting for him to return; this is the first opportunity we have had to call him up since his recovery. I hope he is very happy when he returns. Let’s not place all the responsibility on him.”
Brazil’s Struggles Without Neymar
Brazil has struggled in World Cup qualifying without Neymar, winning just two of their last eight matches. They currently sit fifth in the CONMEBOL qualifying table, trailing leaders Argentina by seven points after 12 games.
The team has already lost four matches, an uncharacteristically poor run for the five-time World Cup champions.
Notable Absences from Brazil’s Squad
Despite strong performances, Manchester United loanee Antony (Real Betis) and Real Madrid wonderkid Endrick were not included in the squad.
Dorival Junior emphasized the need for consistency, saying:
“We have to show consistency in these matches. We’re not satisfied with our position in the table, but there’s still time to turn things around.”
“In our last four games, we have already shown a higher level. I trust the work we are doing, and I have no doubt that we will play great matches.”
