Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has been tipped to “thrive” at Barcelona, Real Madrid, or Bayern Munich if he leaves Anfield this summer on a free transfer.
The Dutch defender, who turned 33 last summer, has been in exceptional form this season, leading Liverpool to the top of the Premier League and into the Carabao Cup final. However, his future remains uncertain as his contract is set to expire at the end of the season.
Van Dijk’s Future in Doubt
Despite his dominant displays, there has been no agreement on a contract extension with Liverpool. The uncertainty has fueled speculation that some of Europe’s biggest clubs could attempt to sign Van Dijk on a free transfer, with Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich reportedly monitoring the situation.
When asked about his future, Van Dijk himself admitted he has “no idea” what will happen, leaving the door open for a potential exit.
Jose Fonte: Van Dijk Would Thrive in Spain or Germany
Former teammate Jose Fonte, who played alongside Van Dijk at Southampton, believes the Dutchman would have no trouble adapting to one of Europe’s elite clubs.
“Van Dijk would thrive at Barcelona, Real Madrid, or Bayern Munich, and I would not be surprised to see him at one of those clubs next season,” Fonte told Mundo Deportivo.
“Those clubs will be looking for defenders as reliable as Van Dijk, and everyone will be watching if he reaches the end of the season without signing a new contract.”
Fonte also praised Van Dijk’s longevity, stating that he could easily play at the highest level for another three or four years.
Van Dijk’s Legacy at Liverpool
Regardless of what happens, Van Dijk’s place in Liverpool history is already cemented. Since arriving from Southampton in 2018 for a then-world record fee for a defender (£75m), he has been instrumental in Liverpool’s resurgence under Jurgen Klopp.
Key Achievements at Liverpool:
✔ Premier League champion (2019/20) – ending the club’s 30-year wait for a league title.
✔ Champions League winner (2018/19) – starring in the final against Tottenham.
✔ Eight major trophies, including the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.
✔ Over 300 appearances in all competitions.
✔ PFA Players’ Player of the Year (2018/19).
✔ Four-time inclusion in the PFA Team of the Year.
Fonte went on to call Van Dijk “one of the best defenders in football history”, adding that even if his pace declines, his positional awareness and reading of the game will continue to make him an elite defender.
What Next for Van Dijk?
Liverpool will almost certainly try to convince Van Dijk to stay, but the lure of a new challenge at one of Europe’s giants could be tempting.
If he does leave Anfield, where will he go next? Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich are all in need of defensive reinforcements, making them logical destinations for the Dutch captain.
