Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha has hit back at claims about his behavior following the team’s 3-1 defeat to Chelsea, branding a reporter a “liar” and responding to criticism from manager Vitor Pereira regarding his “body language.”
What Happened?
Cunha became the subject of controversy after journalist Liam Keen from The Express and Star reported that the Brazilian headed straight to the tunnel after the Chelsea match without acknowledging Wolves’ traveling fans. This sparked accusations of poor sportsmanship, further compounded by comments from Wolves manager Vitor Pereira.
Cunha’s Response
Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Cunha vehemently denied Keen’s claims, accusing the reporter of spreading false information.
“Liar. I went to applaud them, congratulated the referees and the opposing players. Then I went to the tunnel,” Cunha wrote.
“Don’t ever come and ask me to give you an interview again.”
Pereira’s Criticism
Wolves manager Vitor Pereira also expressed dissatisfaction with Cunha’s attitude during the Chelsea defeat, highlighting concerns about the forward’s demeanor and commitment on the pitch.
“He can be frustrated as he wants to win, but everyone in the dressing room wants to win,” Pereira said.
“I don’t like this body language. I want someone, as a captain, trying to help the team—running, suffering, and fighting all together.”
Pereira added that while he understands Cunha’s frustration, he expects a better display of leadership moving forward.
“This is something I cannot understand. Again, it is the frustration—which I understand—but we need to be together. Together we can fix the problems and stay in the Premier League.”
The Bigger Picture
Pereira also hinted that external distractions might be affecting Cunha’s focus, saying:
“He is committed to Wolves, but when you keep hearing about other clubs, then it is human [to be distracted]. The team needs him with good energy and not with frustration. He must slow down and put his mind in the right way.”
What’s Next for Wolves?
Wolves are currently teetering on the edge of the relegation zone, sitting just above Ipswich Town on goal difference with 16 points from 22 matches. The club faces a crucial clash against Arsenal next Saturday, and much of the spotlight will be on Cunha to see how he responds to the criticism and pressure.
Wolves’ survival in the Premier League will require unity and strong performances from their key players, including Cunha, whose attitude and focus will be vital in the coming weeks.
